Discovery of Art: Grade 9
The Discovery of Art class meets 3 days per week for 1 semester, and is divided into 2 parts. During the first quarter, the students learn about a variety of topics including art terminology, the elements and principles of art, art materials and ways that artists produce their work, and art criticism. Assessments consist of quizzes and tests, as well as some hands-on projects associated with the various units of study.
The second half of the semester consists of a course in basic drawing. Students go through a series of exercises to help them enhance their skills of observation, which leads to the ability to represent objects realistically on paper. Each student is given a sketchbook, and homework consists of drawing a specified object each night from observation. Grades are determined by effort and personal improvement.
